Vitamins And Minerals - Common Questions
By Health Editor
Here are some commonly asked questions and answers about vitamins and minerals ...
We're all being told to stay as healthy as possible by getting plenty of exercise, being active and eating well. If we can't eat well because of time and scheduling, or any other reason, we're encouraged to supplement with vitamins and minerals. There's a lack of information about how to take vitamins and nutritional supplements, and many people have a lot of questions about what choices they should make, which products they should try, and whether they're doing the right thing. We'll address some situations and questions people have asked and provide the answers that will help get you started in the right direction:
Diabetes is on the rise, and those who have diabetic children can't use those sugary children's vitamins that most kids take. Those parents ask whether there is some way to make sure the child gets his or her daily vitamins without adding extra sugar.
Some vitamin manufacturers offer sugar-free options. One-a-Day has a sugarless vitamin for a child that seems to go down well with kids. Kirkland also makes a comparable multi vitamin. The other option is to forget about chewable vitamins completely and give your child a pill to swallow whole. If she's not old enough to swallow pills, consider crushing the tablet and mixing it into a drink or even a spoonful of applesauce.
Some people help care for aging parents and there are many advertisements that encourage the elderly to turn to liquid supplements like Ensure to get nutrition. Not only that, these same people don't know if this is a good source of vitamins or whether their aging parents should take a supplement on top of that.
Liquid supplements like Ensure are used by a lot of people in poor health who aren't able to eat much. This includes cancer patients and many elderly people. While these drinks do contain a pretty good range of vitamins, bear in mind that one serving will not give them all of their daily requirements. In fact, these drinks usually contain only about 50% of the necessary levels of many nutrients. They are good for people in poor health because they are also high in calories, so they help to provide energy. But if your father is only drinking one Ensure per day, he may need a vitamin supplement as well.
Many consumers notice that, when buying vitamins for their children, some brands advertise the fact that they have no iron in them. This begs the question, "What's the problem with giving my kids iron?"
Iron is good for your children in the proper dose. The problem is that sometimes children get their hands on the bottle of sweet children's vitamins and eat a whole bunch of them before their parents notice. If they manage to consume too many pills, it can result in iron poisoning. This has happened to thousands of children, and can sometimes lead to death. You should keep vitamins out of the reach of young children as you would with any medication. Iron-free vitamin tablets are an extra precaution you can take to alleviate the worry.
An often overlooked question is whether you should take vitamins with food or on an empty stomach.
If you are taking a multi vitamin, or a supplement of vitamins A, D, E or K, make sure you have food at the same time. These vitamins are fat soluble, which means that they need some fat with them in order for your body to be able to use them.
Here's something about carrots and vitamin A that you may not have known. An individual asked if eating a lot of carrots really does make a person orange, or whether that was just an old wives' tale.
Silly as it may sound, too many carrots can give your skin an orange tinge and it doesn't take as many as you might think. Even just a few carrots a day can overdose your system with vitamin A, with the results showing up on the surface. Try eating a variety of vegetables to get your vitamins.

Vitamins Facts & Tips
The main advantage of a liquid supplement is the speed and ease of absorption by the body. Since there is no need to break down a solid, the vitamins are absorbed immediately. Liquid vitamin fans also claim that the absorption rate is much higher, making the supplements more effective.
