Managing Stress In Complex Situations

Stress comes in all forms and to understand stress we need to recognize the signs of stress and the stressors that cause it. For example, if you are going to bid on a new apartment, this is obviously a stressor since you are expecting good results and rejections are possible. None of us like to hear the word "no," but all of us are going to suffer rejections in life.

Don't set yourself up to believe that rejection is out of the question. Rather, if you were bidding to purchase an apartment or property, I would suggest you try and stay focused, since your appearance, attitude and personality all play a significant role in the decision. If the property owner sees you as a person that is experiencing severe emotional ups and downs in the process, he or she might think the worst. However, if you remain calm, cool and collected, aware of the fact that the property owner could exercise his or her choice to say "no" to your offer, then you are in control of your stress, as you would be acknowledging that the stressors exist.

If the property owner tells you "no" and you have planned for this eventuality, then you know that your next step is to review the list of other apartments you have written as potentially suitable for your needs and go talk to the next property owner. You might have a list of five or more property owners with apartments available so be sure to make appointments to visit each property owner at a schedule suitable to both you and the property owners. This will help you to minimize stress and will also provide you a measure of hope.

However, what if the entire list of property owners rejects your bid? Then you have additional problems that cause stress. The key in this situation to minimizing stress is not to give up hope. Grab a piece of paper, start over again, and hope for the best because something positive will happen eventually. When you are least expecting it something good will come your way.

We can look at a more complicated example to see how we can still manage stress. What if you are homeless, staying with a friend who has just given you two weeks to find a place to live? What if your credit is bad and you have received numerous rejections from apartment complexes. What if your funds are minimal and you are struggling just to survive? We see that stress is overwhelming because the stressors are more complicated than searching for an apartment.

How can a person handle these situations, feel secure and reduce the fears? First, you can start by thanking your friend for helping you out for the moment. You can then focus your resources on finding a job in between the two weeks that will provide you with more resources when a place becomes available. On the other hand, if a place is not available the job will help you pay for a motel room for a couple of weeks.

We know we have to save all the money we can to get through this area of turmoil. We could also find resources that work to help people in our situation get back on our feet. We can continue hoping, since the worst has not happened at the moment. We could also put forth the effort to search for landowners that offer us potential hope. Even if you find a place out of your range and are accepted, you could pay up for the month and find another solution for making ends meet every other month. The situation then is not hopeless; rather it is more complex than common problems.

On the other hand, what if we reverse this situation and believe that the worst has arrived? What if we expect rejections and never see a way out of the situation? If we are leaning on "what ifs", then we are setting ourselves up for a serious stress disorder. As you can see, stress management is possible in most situations. If you are stressing over every little detail, then you are promoting an unhealthy - or even toxic - relationship with stress that can only help cause additional disaster.

If you cannot see a way out of your current situation, then you need to sit down and re-evaluate the situation carefully to review your problem and find resources that can help to minimize your stress. Your health and your life may depend on it.
