Once you find out that you have halitosis, or even if you think you may have it and want to know how to avoid it in the future, you'll need to know a few basic methods for the prevention of halitosis so that you can enjoy good dental health and clean fresh breath any time of the day. Here are some suggestions for the prevention of halitosis that you can put into practice every day.
Halitosis, or bad breath, is caused by the buildup of bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria could be in certain cavities of the mouth that may be hard to reach with a toothbrush or floss, the roof of the mouth, or the gums. In order to rid the mouth of these harmful bacteria, it is important to keep the mouth clean throughout the day. This means that you should brush your teeth after every meal (you may have to take a toothbrush to work or school with you), as well as floss at least once a day. These practices are especially important if you have had dental work done (i.e. braces, crowns) since it is easy for food particles to get stuck between the teeth.
You should also make sure that you maintain a healthy diet for the prevention of halitosis. This means that you will need to include lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet, so you can give your body the nutrients and vitamins it needs in order to keep your organs functioning properly. Sometimes, halitosis and bacteria buildup can be a result of poor organ function, which can in turn cause bad breath, and the high water content in fruits and vegetables helps to clean germs from the mouth. You may also want to try a mouthwash with an antiseptic that will clear bacteria from your mouth, and you can use this both before and after brushing.
