Medical technology is advancing faster than the publishers of the medical journals can write about it. Leaps in the field of lasik vision correction are no different. Over the past fifteen to twenty years, the ability of eye surgeons to utilize lasers in surgical procedures has seen unprecedented advancements. Everything from microscopic lasers, which can cut with no extraneous tissue damage, to three dimensional imaging systems have improved the ability of corrective laser eye surgery to transform people's lives.

Long before the development of lasik vision surgery, eye doctors came to realize that their patient's eyes did not properly focus on images. They learned to combat this problem by distorting the image to a particular degree before it actually reached the processing center of the eye. Using refractive lenses in eyeglasses, and later contact lenses, eye doctors were able to fix an image so that the eye perceived it correctly. Considering the technology that they had available, this was a remarkable step and it allowed many people to live much more productive lives than they would have otherwise.

Not satisfied with running a simple ophthalmology clinic, visionary eye doctors began to wonder what it would be like if they could change the way that the eye perceives and image instead of changing the image that they eye sees. In order to do this, the focal tools of the eye would have to be altered. Lasik vision correction was the first tool developed that was able to do this without the risk of major damage to the eye. Reshaping the cornea allowed doctors to maximize the eyes natural ability to focus.

As lasik vision technology continues to push forward, eye surgeons will be able to offer an even greater array of services. Not only will lasers be used for refractive surgeries that repair basic vision problems, but they may also be used to perform complex surgeries that are needed to combat any number of orbital diseases. The techniques used to enhance vision will continue to get better and will be available to a wider range of people. Folks whose lives have been limited in some way because of their vision problems, or because of their reliance on eyeglasses and contact lenses, will be free to see and explore entirely new realms of activity.

It seems that we have only begun to visualize the possibilities of lasik vision correction. Scientists are working continuously to improve and hone the techniques that are used to perform lasik eye surgery. Soon, corrective laser eye surgery will be as common as a trip to the dentist to get a cavity filled. It will become the singular option for vision correction
