Published by M. B. Aria
In this article we look at the benefits of engaging in physical activity as an aid to treating cancer ...
If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, it's even more important to take care of yourself. When stress level is high, the better you eat and the more activity you take part in, the better your mental and physical health will be. Staying at your correct weight is important if you are taking radiation, or chemotherapy. Protein is important to keep up your energy and strength. If you are eating well, you will have more energy and feel better about your body.
During treatment, you may not feel like eating. There are many reasons for not feeling like eating. Side effects of your cancer treatment may give you mouth sores, cause you to be nausea or vomit, and kill your appetite. If that happens, your doctor will be able to help you with nutritional tips about preserving your weight and keeping your body healthy. The National Cancer Institute offers a booklet called "Eating Hints for Cancer Patients." You will find many interesting and tasty recipes as well as other ideas to help the cancer patient with nutrition and staying healthy.
Physical activity is also important to someone who is taking cancer treatments. It's a known fact, the more active you are, the better you feel. You will be able to remain active after treatment starts, your doctor will encourage it. When you are active physically, you feel better and your energy stays up.
There are many accepted ways to exercise including, walking, swimming, biking, and yoga. Exercising may also help reduce the nausea and pain you feel because of the treatment. Physical activity will also help relieve stress.
Are you limited to the physical activity you can do? If you have any doubts, talk to your doctor. If your exercise causes you pain, you may want to stop it until you have had a chance to talk to your doctor. Walking is a good form of exercise and is recommended for those who haven't already been physically active. Starting slowly, taking a walk around the block once a day, then working up to longer distances is a great place to start. Experts tell us that walking just one block at a leisurely pace is better than no exercise at all.
Another form of physical activity you may want to look at is yoga. Yoga combines activity with meditation. Yoga will help relieve stress and will help your stamina and energy. Adding meditation to your yoga routine will also help bring you a peace that may be lacking at this time of your life.
If you are in cancer treatment, you will want to keep your body as healthy as possible. Eating the proper foods and getting enough exercise will help your physically as well as mentally. If you are unsure, of what you can take part in, talk to your doctor. Your emotional health is important while you are in cancer treatment. Help your body and your emotions by having a regular exercise routine. Choose something you enjoy and exercise three to four days a week.
