Ulceration Facts
Millions of people in the United States and billions of people worldwide are afflicted each year with a stomach ulcer. You would not think that such a small thing could be so disruptive in people’s lives, but it really can cause serious pain and injury. Each meal is a hardship because they know that it may be the meal that causes a flare up. They have to carefully monitor their healing healthy diet. Ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract is not something to take lightly. Education is the key to understanding how ulcers are formed and how they are treated.
The actual process of forming an ulcer is called ulceration. The process can happen to a stomach ulcer or a leg ulcer. The process begins with the inner lining of the gastrointestinal tract or the surface of the skin. After going through that initial layer it makes its way to the sensitive inner tissue. That is when it is officially called an ulcer.
Treatment for a H pylori ulcer is a three fold slam. It starts off with the doctors seeing where the ulcer is located. It will be a gastric ulcer, a stomach ulcer, or a duodenal ulcer. They will do this either by an x-ray or by an endoscope. If they do it by an endoscope, then they will perform a small biopsy and test the tissue. If it comes back that the H pylori bacteria is the root cause of the ulcer, then the doctor will prescribe a triple therapy ulcer treatment. This treatment consists of an antibiotic, such as amoxicillin or metronidazole, a proton pump inhibitor, such as pantoprazole, and clarithromycin.
Smoking, stress, blood type and spicy foods are not the culprits behind ulceration. However, Helicobacter pylori are a cause of gastric ulcers. If you do have H pylori ulcers, then you will need to take an antibiotic along with the prescribed medication for healing the actual ulcer itself. The antibiotic will clear up the bacterium and speed along the process of leaving your ulcer where it belongs; in the past.
