PUD - Peptic Ulcer Disease

It is not easy to have Peptic Ulcer Disease, otherwise known as PUD. PUD is a condition where an ulcer has formed in one of four places: the esophagus, the duodenum, the stomach or Meckle’s Diverticulum. But regardless of where the ulcer is located, it is a painful condition that afflicts millions of people and causes untold pain. For some people it is a malignant tumor and for others it may be benign. All will have to see a doctor so that he or she can prescribe the right set of medications for the illness.

PUD of the stomach is called a gastric ulcer. One in the throat is an esophageal ulcer. If the PUD is located in the duodenum, then it is a duodenal ulcer. A PUD in the Meckle’s Diverticulum, which is a small enlarged bulge in the small intestine and is present at birth, is basically an intestinal ulcer. You can find ulcers all over the body. Some people with diabetes will develop a leg ulcer sometime during their life. Very few ulcers are a stomach ulcer, but those that are malignant tumors in 4% of cases, must be diagnosed with a biopsy.

Peptic Ulcer Disease is treated with various methods. The first treatment is usually antacids, but if that is not working, then the doctor will prescribe medication to help control the acid in your stomach, which is what causes you the pain during an episode. If it is an H Pylori infection, then the doctor will need to prescribe an antibiotic to clear up the infection. You may want to consider switching some foods in your diet. Spicy foods do not cause an ulcer but they will exacerbate the problem greatly if you are not careful about what you eat.

For many people Peptic Ulcer Disease is an ongoing battle. One ulcer clears up and another ulcer makes an appearance. But if you find the root causes of the gastric ulcers, then you can find the right combination of medications to help your body heal. You can do your part too by taking your medication regularly and by avoiding foods or substances that aggravate your gastric ulcers.
