Information About Asthma

Asthma can be a very complicated condition, but it can be treated so that the sufferer can lead a normal life. Asthma is a chronic disease of the respiratory system that involves the constriction of the airway that results in inflammation. This inflammation leads to an excessive amount of mucus that becomes an obstruction that inhibits breathing.

Allergies and asthma tend to have a lot in common because an allergic reaction can often trigger asthma. Asthma takes hold in what is known as an”episode” or “attack”. These episodes can be triggered by a number of things, including allergens, exercise or physical exertion, emotional stress, and even air quality. Allergies and asthma have a direct link because the symptoms of the episodes often play off of one another.

In an episode, the airway narrows in the asthma sufferer. Symptoms that result from having such an asthma attack include coughing, wheezing, shortness or loss of breath and chest tightness. An asthma attack is often disabling as the sufferer struggles to breathe. After an episode, asthma patients usually recover completely.

Asthma occurs because of increasing sensitivity in the airways to outside stimuli. For this reason, asthma sufferers must take note of various factors such as air quality and allergy seasons when they wish to go outdoors. Many asthma attacks can be prevented by being aware of and avoiding allergens or stimuli. Some asthma attacks, however, cannot be prevented because of the nature of the sensitivity of the airways or the bronchial tubes.

Asthma can often prompt many people to stay indoors during certain months of the year when they are more susceptible to asthma attacks. This lifestyle choice can be disabling to many people as they struggle to cope with the disease and learn new ways to overcome it. There are many treatment options available, but some forms of asthma have no treatment possibilities save for avoidance of the stimuli that causes the asthma attacks.

Asthma can seem to be a hopeless and desperate condition that demands complete lifestyle changes in its sufferers. There is hope, however, that treatments will be available for all types of asthma and other bronchial or respiratory issues. Many asthma sufferers are counting on that hope to release them from the prison of asthma once and for all.
